This branch of the Kingsbury family was established on May 22, 1976. All three of our children, Sam, Josh and Amanda, were born and raised in Kenya. All are now adults; each with their own paths in life. Each brings great joy and pleasure into our lives. We are very proud of each of them.
Chari, from a navy family, lived up & down the East Coast of the US, attended high school in Rockville, Maryland, where she and Chip met. He had grown up there most his life. After marrying, they lived in the Kansas City area for four years before their church sent them as missionaries to Kenya in 1980, serving with Elim Fellowship.
From 1980 to 1993, they lived and ministered in the central highlands of Kenya (Nyeri) for 13 years. During that time they mentored church leaders, taught in Bible schools, pastored, planted churches, developed Sunday school curriculum and teachers, discipled Christian businessmen, engaged in friendship evangelism, and raised a family. Chip also earned a Masters Degree in Intercultural Studies/Missions from Wheaton College Graduate School during that period.
After Chip’s doctoral studies at Florida State University, they returned to Kenya, moved to Nairobi where Chip joined the faculty of Daystar University. There, Chip ran the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) – the University’s faculty development program. Chari, meanwhile, after having worked several years in lay-counseling with a local church, and realizing the need for more formal training in that area, first finished her BA in psychology at the University of West Florida, and in 2011 completed a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Daystar University.
They bought an acre of land near Daystar’s Athi River campus in 1999 to establish Ukarimu House and Ministries. In 2004 they moved on site into a small guest house, while construction on Ukarimu House is being done. Ukarimu Ministries is a multifaceted work involving student and faculty ministry and family ministry, including pre-marital and couples counseling, marriage enrichment and parenting seminars. They also host short term events.
